Episode 7: Refining the Vanultra Low-Profile SUV Roof Top Tent Mounts
After extensive testing in Episode 6, we returned to the drawing board to refine our low-profile SUV roof top tent mounts. In this episode, we dive into the design improvements that enhance stability, minimize noise, and introduce added security features. With these refinements, we are one step closer to finalizing our production-ready model.
Key Design Improvements
1. Upgraded Slider Assembly
We made three major enhancements to our slider assembly:
-
Increased Length: To prevent interference with the front bolt catching on the crossbar, we extended the slider assembly for a smoother fit.
-
Material Change: We replaced the ABS plastic with rubber to eliminate tapping noises caused by off-road vibrations.
-
Integrated Bushing: Instead of stacking nylon washers and spacers, we designed a dedicated bushing, improving durability and ease of installation.
2. Optimized Mounting Bracket Design
To enhance compatibility with various roof racks, we adjusted the bracket placement:
-
The mount now attaches to the top of the extrusion instead of the side.
-
This change accommodates more roof rack designs, particularly those with a top T-slot but no side T-slot.
-
The bracket can also be installed on the bottom for added versatility.
3. Improved Quick-Release Handle
Our initial handle design worked well in theory but proved difficult to install when the tent was fully loaded. Our new solution features:
-
A 2D profile handle with cutouts that securely attach to socket head cap screws on the toggle clamp.
-
A low-profile design that allows easy operation, even with a rear crossbar in place.
-
Additional functionality, enabling the handle to engage further for a wider clamp opening, solving clearance issues.
4. Integrated Locking System for Added Security
Security is a top priority, so we added a plunger-style lock with a key. When engaged, the lock secures the clamp handle in place, preventing unauthorized tent removal.
Testing & Final Adjustments
After swapping out the old mounts for the updated versions, we made several key observations:
-
Enhanced Support: We now mount the tent to three crossbars instead of two, improving load distribution for heavier tents (200 lbs+).
-
Optimal Crossbar Placement: The front crossbar is positioned as far forward as possible, the rear crossbar is all the way back, and the middle crossbar is biased toward the front mounting feet. This change is based on Sherpa Equipment Company's recommendation to mount the tent as close as possible to the roof attachments.
-
Bracket Placement Testing: We tested both top and bottom mounting configurations, confirming that the top-mounted brackets provided better clearance and noise reduction.
-
Simplified Installation: We reduced the rubber pad size, attaching it directly to the bracket, streamlining the setup and cutting down on part count of the slider assembly.
Conclusion: Ready for Production
With these refinements, our low-profile SUV roof top tent mounts have reached the production phase. By optimizing stability, reducing noise, and introducing a secure locking system, we’ve created a mount that’s stronger, quieter, and easier to use.
Stay tuned as we transition to full-scale manufacturing—your next adventure with Vanultra is just around the corner!
